It is the richest and most visited religious site in the world, drawing 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily and over 30 crore visitors annually.

Significance: Most visited Hindu temple in the world; one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavism

2 Why Is It Famous?

Tirumala is famous as the abode of Kaliyuga Vaikuntham — the earthly Vaikuntha where Vishnu is believed to permanently reside to save devotees from the trials of Kali Yuga. The temple is also the wealthiest in the world, receiving daily cash and gold offerings exceeding the income of many countries. The hair-tonsuring ritual (devotees shaving their heads as an offering) and the divine darshan queue experience, sometimes lasting 18-20 hours, are unique cultural phenomena famous worldwide.

3 Story and Legends

According to the Varaha Purana and Bhavishya Purana, Lord Vishnu came to earth in the form of Venkateswara to save mankind during the Kali Yuga. Legend says Vishnu took a loan from Kubera (the god of wealth) to fund his wedding to Padmavati (an avatar of Lakshmi), and he remains at Tirumala collecting devotee donations to repay this eternal debt — explaining why devotees offer wealth here. Another legend tells of Lakshmi hiding inside the deity's chest after a quarrel with Vishnu, which is why the idol bears a mark over the heart.

The temple's history spans over 2,000 years. It was first mentioned in Tamil literature of the Sangam period (100 BCE–250 CE). The present structure was built during the rule of Thondaiman kings and was expanded significantly by the Vijayanagara Empire rulers in the 15th century.

Renovations: Major expansions occurred under the Vijayanagara Empire (14th-16th century), particularly by King Krishnadevaraya, who donated extensively and built several mandapams (pillared halls). The temple has been continuously maintained and renovated by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust since 1933.

5 Spiritual Significance

Lord Venkateswara is believed to be the supreme form of Lord Vishnu who came to earth to save humanity from the trials of Kali Yuga. The temple receives the highest donations of any religious institution in the world, with devotees offering gold, cash and hair as a gesture of gratitude.

6 Architecture

Built in classic Dravidian style, the temple complex features a gold-plated Ananda Nilayam Vimana (main tower) above the sanctum, intricately carved gopurams (gateway towers), and the famous Vimana Venkateswara depiction. The main entrance, Mahadwaram, leads through several courtyards to the sanctum where the swayambhu (self-manifested) black stone idol of Venkateswara stands adorned with gold ornaments and the diamond-studded crown.

7 Main Deity Information

Lord Venkateswara (also called Balaji, Srinivasa, or Govinda) is depicted standing, with four arms holding a conch and discus, in a posture of blessing. The idol is believed to be swayambhu (self-manifested, not man-made). Devotees believe the deity's eyes are so powerful that they are normally covered with a camphor paste (Namam) and only fully revealed during specific rituals.

8 Festivals and Celebrations

Brahmotsavam (9-day annual festival in September-October) is the grandest celebration, featuring the famous Garuda Seva vahanam procession. Vaikunta Ekadashi in December-January, when the Vaikunta Dwaram (Gate to Heaven) is opened, is also hugely significant. Annual Float Festival and Rathasapthami are other major events.

September to February offers cooler weather. Avoid major festival periods unless specifically attending, as crowds increase 3-5x.
