The Meenakshi Amman Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi (Parvati) and her consort Sundareswarar (Shiva). It is one of the largest and most architecturally significant temples in India.

Significance: Among the most important Shakti and Shiva shrines in South India

2 Why Is It Famous?

The temple is renowned for its 14 magnificent gopurams (gateway towers), the tallest reaching nearly 52 meters, covered with thousands of vividly painted sculptures of deities, animals, and mythological figures. It is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of India and a defining example of Dravidian temple architecture.

3 Story and Legends

According to legend, the Pandya king Malayadwaja performed a yagna for a son but was blessed instead with a three-breasted daughter named Meenakshi. A divine voice prophesied her extra breast would vanish when she met her destined husband. She grew to become a warrior queen who conquered the world, including Mount Kailash, until she met Shiva — at which point her third breast disappeared, fulfilling the prophecy, and they married.

Renovations: The temple suffered destruction during the Delhi Sultanate invasion in the 14th century. It was extensively rebuilt by the Vijayanagara Empire and later the Nayak dynasty rulers, particularly Thirumalai Nayak, who funded much of the present structure including the magnificent Aayiram Kaal Mandapam (Thousand Pillar Hall).

5 Spiritual Significance

Meenakshi means "fish-eyed" — one with beautiful eyes like a fish. The goddess is believed to grant blessings for marriage and fertility. The temple is one of the largest in India and a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture.
