Kashi Vishwanath Temple
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
⭐ One of 12 Jyotirlingas1 Temple Overview
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located on the western bank of the holy Ganga river in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
Significance: One of the 12 Jyotirlingas; Varanasi is considered the spiritual capital of India
2 Why Is It Famous?
Kashi Vishwanath is famous as the temple where Lord Shiva is believed to grant moksha (liberation) to anyone who dies within the boundaries of Kashi. The temple's proximity to the Ganga and the daily Ganga Aarti at nearby ghats make it one of the most spiritually charged locations for Hindus. The recently completed Kashi Vishwanath Corridor (2021) connecting the temple directly to the Ganga has made it even more iconic.
3 Story and Legends
According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva declared Kashi as his favorite abode and promised that anyone who dies here attains liberation directly, bypassing the cycle of rebirth. Legend also says that when Brahma and Vishnu argued over supremacy, Shiva manifested as an infinite Jyotirlinga (pillar of light) here to settle the dispute, establishing Kashi as eternal.
4 History
The original Kashi Vishwanath Temple was demolished several times by Mughal rulers and rebuilt by Hindu kings. The current temple was built in 1780 by the Maratha ruler Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. The temple complex was recently renovated under the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor project.
Renovations: The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times through history, notably by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669. The gold-plated dome (made with 1000kg of gold) was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab in 1839. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, a massive ₹900 crore redevelopment connecting the temple to the Ganga ghats, was completed and inaugurated by PM Modi in December 2021.
5 Spiritual Significance
Hindus believe that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath and a dip in the Ganga washes away all sins and leads to moksha (liberation). Lord Shiva himself is said to whisper the Taraka mantra into the ears of the dying in Varanasi.
One of 12 Jyotirlingas6 Architecture
The temple features a classic North Indian Nagara style with a striking gold-plated shikhara (spire) visible from across the city. The newly built Kashi Vishwanath Corridor spans 5 lakh square feet, connecting the temple to Lalita Ghat on the Ganga through a grand pedestrian plaza lined with sandstone facades depicting Hindu mythology.
7 Main Deity Information
The presiding deity is Lord Shiva in the form of a Jyotirlinga — a lingam representing the infinite, formless aspect of Shiva. Devotees believe whispering the Taraka Mantra into the ears of the dying here grants instant liberation.
8 Festivals and Celebrations
Maha Shivaratri is the most significant festival, when the temple remains open all night with continuous abhishekam. Shravan month (July-August) sees massive crowds for daily jalabhishek. Dev Deepawali (Kartik Purnima) lights up the entire ghats of Varanasi.

October to March for pleasant weather. Maha Shivaratri for the most spiritually intense experience, though extremely crowded.
Varanasi summers (April-June) are extremely hot, often exceeding 40°C. Winters (Nov-Feb) are cool and foggy, ideal for visiting.
