Significance: One of the Char Dham; one of 108 Divya Desams
2 Why Is It Famous?
Badrinath is famous as the place where Lord Vishnu is believed to have meditated for thousands of years, protected from cold by his consort Lakshmi who transformed into a Badri (jujube) tree to shield him — giving the location its name. Its dramatic Himalayan setting alongside the Alaknanda River and the nearby hot springs (Tapt Kund) add to its mystique.
3 Story and Legends
Legend holds that Lord Vishnu chose this spot for penance due to its serene beauty, but the harsh cold troubled him. Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to provide shade and shelter, leading to the name "Badrinath" (Lord of the Badri tree). Adi Shankaracharya is said to have rediscovered the deity's idol from the Alaknanda River and established formal worship here in the 8th century.
4 History
The temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The idol of Badrinarayan (Vishnu) is believed to be made of Shaligram (black stone). The temple was extensively renovated by the Garhwal kings.
Renovations: The temple has been repeatedly damaged by avalanches and earthquakes over centuries and rebuilt by successive Garhwal rulers, with significant 17th-century renovation giving it much of its current form.
5 Spiritual Significance
Badrinath is where Lord Vishnu meditated for thousands of years. The name Badrinath comes from "Badari" (jujube berries) as the area was once covered with jujube forests. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams mentioned in Tamil Vaishnava literature.
One of the Char Dham; one of 108 Divya Desams6 Architecture
The temple features a distinctive conical shikhara unlike typical North Indian temples, painted in bright colors, with a small arched doorway. The structure is compact compared to plains temples, designed to withstand extreme Himalayan conditions.
7 Main Deity Information
Lord Vishnu is worshipped here as Badrinarayan, depicted in a meditative posture, carved from black Shaligram stone, distinct from typical standing Vishnu idols.
8 Festivals and Celebrations
The temple opening (Akshaya Tritiya) and closing (around Vijayadashami/Diwali period) ceremonies are major events when thousands gather to witness the gates open/close for the season. Mata Murti Ka Mela honoring Vishnu's mother is also significant.
